I have two of these. The one with date code 0915 has been in use in my office as a mug warmer and, later in the day, as a coaster for cold drinks. I really liked having something to keep my coffee warm in the mornings.

Recently I came into the office in the morning to a strong burning electrical smell. I tracked it back to this mug warmer. Even though the switch was in the Off position, the indicator light was glowing red and the unit was very hot. After unplugging it and letting it cool, I took it apart to discover that the circuit board had shorted and burned, melting some of the plastic around the switch housing. I wonder how much more it would have melted if I hadn''t been there to unplug it at that time.

I contacted Underwriters Laboratories. They basically said it was my fault: all heating appliances are to be unplugged when not in use. I was surprised that their testing makes that assumption, since it seems unlikely that anyone actually does that.

In my opinion, there are two design faults at play here:

- The back edge of the heating plate extends over the circuit board. If liquid drips onto the heating plate (inevitable in a mug/cup holder), it can drip onto the circuit board, causing a short.

- If the switch were separate, in the cord, it could not short out even if the circuit board got wet.

If you continue to use this appliance, don''t get it wet and unplug it when not in use.

I''m an avid coffee drinker, but it has been many years since I used a coffee warmer. After purchasing this product based on the reviews, I was terribly disappointed. In the "good ole days" a coffee warmer actually kept your coffee hot, similar to a hot plate. Apparently, a lot has changed since then. Probably due to safety issues, and a desire to cut costs, companies are producing "warmers" that are totally useless for serious coffee drinkers.This warmer is no exception.

I take exception with some of the other reviewers who claimed this warmer kept their drink "piping hot." I think their claims are stretching the truth a bit. However, I might concede their point if they are using a small tea cup, which holds very little liquid. Smaller amounts of liquid require smaller amounts of heat energy to get the job done. Therefore, it''s possible that the warmer keeps their pea size cup of tea "hot." As a matter of fact, once I''ve consumed my coffee down to a small amount left in the bottom of the mug, that part gets hot.

As a coffee drinker, I want a "warmer" that keeps my mug of coffee "hot." This product comes no where near that desire. In a moment, I will suggest a simple improvement you can make that significantly improves the heat-holding capacity of the mug on the warmer (see below).

The only positive comment I can provide for this warmer is the stylish design. It looks nice, and has the switch located on top of the warmer instead of on the cord. However, the switch requires a higher force to operate, and makes a loud clicking sound, which is a nuisance.

I experimented with both a flat bottomed mug and a ridged bottom mug (my favorite mug has a ridged bottom). I could not tell any difference, practically speaking, between the heat holding capacity of the flat versus ridged bottom mugs. They both degenerated to an unacceptable drinking temperature.

It appears that the greatest amount of heat transfer is out the top of the mug (cup) through evaporation and convection. Therefore, you can significantly increase the heat holding ability by putting a top on your mug while using the warmer. I made a simple top by cutting a piece of cardboard slightly larger than the top of the mug, and then wrapping it with aluminum foil. I just lay this on top of the mug, while working at my desk. While this is not the perfect solution, and is a little bit of a hassle, at least my coffee now stays at an acceptable drinking temperature while using this warmer.

I have not evaluated other warmers, and I have no desire to do so. I suspect that I would be hard put to find any other device in this category that would be significantly better than this one. The days are gone where coffee "warmers" went above the call of duty and actually kept your drink hot. If you truly want that kind of experience, I suspect you will need to graduate to a more costly hot plate solution.

I took into consideration 2 specific reviews. 1.) The person who intentionally left their warmer on overnight, unattended with the end result of the warmer melting and burning into their counter (duh!) and 2.) Another who suggested using a silicone beverage cover to retain heat. That being said, as a precaution I placed a stone coaster with a cork bottom under my warmer and also purchased a silicone beverage cover from BBB (they also sell them on Amazon) as to deter loss of heat through evaporation. I the conducted an experiment where I filled my coffee mug with room temp coffee and creamer from the fridge and placed my mug with cover on burner. Within 45 minutes my coffee was comfortably warm, not scolding but perfectly toasty to cuddle up with and drink with easy. Beats microwaving. I recommend for those who always get to their drinks after they have cooled. And for the price, I bought 2. One for the living room and one for my nightstand.

It is cheap; that may be its only positive feature. I went by the so many positive reviews, but in the end, I was misled. I don''t know why people liked it so much. There were three issues that I encountered. 1) It is not powerful enough. Other similar products have more power. This affects how warm it will keep your beverage. It doesn''t do a good job. Perhaps if you use a flat bottomed mug it would work better, but I don''t have any and I want to use my good ones. 2) The paint on the plate chipped off starting with the first use and continued to do that so it looked ugly within a day. Maybe this is not important to some. 3) And this was the most important to me. It has a rather stiff switch to turn it on and off. I kept forgetting to turn it off. Then it stays hot and in addition to wasting energy, is in fact a safety hazard. I burned my hand on it not realizing that I hadn''t turned it off. Other products offer either an automatic turn off after some time, or they turn on only when a mug is placed on them using a simple switch at the bottom. That is a much better arrangement, but it costs a little more, as does a ceramic plate that doesn''t have paint chipping off all the time. I do not recommend this product. Pay a little more and get something better.

Prior to purchasing this mug warmer, I read the reviews, and I wasn''t sure if this product could my coffee hot enough. I have a large stoneware mug (16 oz. capacity). Turns out, the mug fits fits nicely on the warmer, and my coffee does stay hot. I made a little aluminum foil cover for my coffee mug, to keep a "film" from forming on the top of my coffee (I use heavy cream in my coffee). Not only does the foil cover keep a film from forming, it prevents heat from rising from the mug. My coffee stays nice and hot for as long as it takes me to finish it, which can take an hour or more. When my coffee is partially gone, the mug warmer makes the remaining coffee almost too hot to drink! Get this warming plate and make a simple foil cover for your mug; your coffee will stay hot! Another thing: There is no heat buildup under the warming plate. I have it sitting directly on my desk top and the wood feels barely warm from the product.

I work 7 am to 5 pm and it is on the entire time, 5 to 6 days a week. It keeps my tea at just the right temperature. Not scalding or room temperature like other warmers I''ve purchased.
The 60 inch cord is long enough to go across my large desk. The hot plate is 3.25 inches in diameter, making it the right size for even my large bottomed coffee mug. The entire warmer is 5.2 by 8.6 inches, so it''s not cumbersome having it sit on my desk. This was a great purchase, I''m glad I got it.
** I did not receive this product for free or at a discounted price in exchange for my review. I do not anticipate any problems with it''s performance in the future, however, should I experience any adverse issues I will come back and update this review accordingly.

I can''t be bothered returning it because it does the job, but as a gift it would be disappointing to see it marred during typical use.

As a slow coffee drinker, this mug warmer is a godsend. It does exactly as advertised and I love it. That said, there are a couple problems. The most glaring one is the stiff on/off switch located in the back, which cannot be changed with one finger or even two. I find I need my whole hand to hold the warmer in place while turning it on or off. Also, the back location of the button is inconvenient. Hopefully you don''t hurt your finger feeling around for the button in the slightly wrong place. I still recommend this product and happily use it every day.
